Wipers which don’t do a good job of cleaning their windshield are a hazard to the person driving the car and to everyone else on the road. It’s estimated that approximately 23% of all auto accidents are weather-related each year. While we don’t know what percentage of those are due to poor windshield wipers, we have a pretty good idea that it’s pretty high.

All of which brings us to our next point. By the time most people realize they need new wipers, they often just end up running down to their local store and buying the first pair they see. And these cheap wipers are usually just barely a step up from the failing wipers they currently own. The best way to buy wipers is to do the research and find the “best” pair of wipers for your car. Of course, we know people are extremely busy, so we went ahead and did the work for you.

Looking at these wipers, it’s obvious that the manufacturers worked on adding some innovative features to it. It’s designed to provide streak-free performance and do it in the rain, snow, and even sleet. This product has a temperature tolerance of -40 degrees to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Another great feature found on these wipers are the easy-to-use J-hook that makes installation a snap. And finally, this product is designed with a synthetic rubber squeegee shape that is designed to hold up to extreme weather conditions. Unfortunately, this is where it faltered a little bit because we don’t feel that it flexed well enough in cold temperatures to get the job done.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t Flex Well in the Cold

8Michelin 8524 Stealth Ultra

CHECK LATEST PRICE

Stealth Ultra 8524 wipers are designed much in the same way as their cousin, the 8522, except we feel that these particular wipers do a better job at dealing with the rain. When we checked them out, we noticed that they didn’t leave the same film but did a pretty good job at clearing away snow. Unfortunately, it didn’t do a great job dealing with a lot of snow, but believe me when I say that there are worse wipers for snow. What these wipers do have going for them include a smart hint that holds the wiper blade securely to the windshield, almost universal compatibility (with the appropriate adapter) and the ability to hold up to wear.

Pros:

  • Easy To Use
  • Universal Compatibility
  • Inexpensive
  • Handles Heavy Rain Well

Cons:

  • Didn’t Handle Heavy Snow Well
  • Becomes Squeaky After Awhile

Some people find it hard to believe that these inexpensive wipers could actually do a great job, but I’m here to tell you they do. They have an all-metal design that’s made to hold up to a variety of weather conditions. They not only can handle heavy rain but can also handle snow and sleet, too. They also have a blade design that allows them to contours to high wrap vehicles. Everything considered, these wipers did a really good job, but there are a couple of things to mention. One, they end up squeaking after a few weeks, and two, they just don’t hold up as long as they should. Fortunately, this is balanced by their inexpensive cost.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • All-Weather Construction
  • Handles Rain Well
  • Handles Snow Well

Cons:

  • Squeaks after awhile
  • Doesn’t Last Long Enough

Although we haven’t been exactly kind to other models of this particular blade, we feel the 8521 is a fairly good product that does a good job at removing snow and rain. These wipers don’t streak, don’t squeak and remove water even during heavy downpours. While it still doesn’t perform to our exact standards during sleeting conditions, it did do a better job than other Michelin wipers. Overall, we feel this is a good product that works quite well.

The Ultimate Windshield Wiper Guide

Everyone knows, or should know, that vehicle maintenance should be performed on a regular basis to keep a vehicle in top physical condition. And most people do take the time on a regular basis to make sure that their vehicles are well maintained. However, not everyone takes the time to make sure their wipers are in good physical condition. In fact, most people don’t think about their wipers until they begin to fail. Which isn’t the safest or most the efficient way to keep your wipers in good condition.

To help remedy that situation, we’ve decided to tell you exactly how often your wipers should be inspected and what you can do to keep them in good physical condition. We’re also going to give you some tips on when you should replace your wipers completely, as well as some signs that your wipers need to be immediately replaced immediately. Along the way, we’ll also provide you with a few bonus tips to help you get the most out of your windshield wiper buying process and buy the best wipers possible. Okay, let’s get started.

Inspect Your Wipers Regularly

The first thing you’re going to want to do is to inspect your wipers on a regular basis. This doesn’t mean that you should check them whenever you think about it. No, it means taking a serious look at your wipers at least once a month. This means pulling the arm out and looking at not only the arm of the wiper but the blade and its connection. You need to check it and make sure everything is in good working condition. It’s also a good idea to have your mechanic look at your windshield wipers whenever your car is serviced, just as a precaution.

Inspect Your Windshield

During this monthly inspection, you shouldn’t just concentrate your efforts on your wipers. You should also take a hard look at your windshield. Make sure that it doesn’t have any chips or cracks in it. If there are, then you should have the windshield replaced or repaired immediately. Remember, even a small chip or crack can suddenly become a major problem, and this often happens with little to no warning.

Check Your Windshield Wiper Solution

Since you’re checking your wipers and windshield, you may as well take the few extra moments to make sure that your wiper solution reservoir is filled as well. After all, you don’t want to have to come to a situation where you absolutely need the solution, and it’s completely empty, so make sure that you fill it with an appropriate wiper solution. This means either using an all-weather window cleaning solution or one that’s specifically designed for the current season. Remember, summer windshield washing solutions can freeze during the winter months, so always use an appropriate solution.

Keep Your Windshield Wipers Clean

One way to make sure your wipers last as long as possible is to clean them on a regular basis. Dirt, grime, and other particles can do a real number on your windshield wipers and windshield, so it’s important to remove these elements regularly. Most wiper manufacturers recommend that wipers are cleaned every time the gas tank is filled. We’ll go a step further and say that this is also a good time to clean your windshield as well. When you wash your car, you’ll also want to take the time to use a wet sponge to clean the windshield wiper to make sure it’s in good condition.

During the winter months, you are going to want to be especially careful with your windshield wipers. This is when it’s statistically most likely that your wipers are damaged. That’s because many people try to remove ice or snow from their windshields with the wipers. This is absolutely something that you should not do. Instead, use an ice scraper and deicer to remove ice, sleet, and snow from your windshield. Your wipers will thank you for it.

Signs Your Wipers May Need Replacement

Even with monthly inspections and regular cleaning, it’s possible that your wipers may suddenly begin to fail. Sometimes this is due to a defect in the product itself, and sometimes it’s just due to excess wear. Either way, you should check your wipers if any of the following conditions occur:

Chattering: This most often happens after vehicles have been sitting for a while. It’s caused by the curved blade of the wiper staying in constant contact with the windshield without being used. Replace them, if necessary.

Streaking: Streaking is sometimes caused by a poorly designed product, but it can also be caused by tree sap or road grime on the blade. This can be solved by either cleaning the wiper blade or replacing it.

Split Rubber: The rubber will begin to degrade on windshield wipers because of sunlight. If you begin noticing this problem, then replace the blade.

Worn Rubber: If your wiper blade is worn down, replace the wiper immediately.

Bent Frame: Automatic car washes and other things can bend your wiper’s frame, so if you notice this defect, then your best bet is to replace the whole wiper.

Windshield Wiper Buying Tips

When buying wipers, you are going to want to keep a few things in mind. One, you’ll want to make sure that you get the right wiper for the make and model of your car. Two, you’ll want to make sure that you get the right wiper length. And three, you’ll want to decide whether you want to get seasonal wipers or use an all-season wiper.

Some wipers are manufactured to be used during an appropriate season, and you should keep in mind that if you’re going to use them, then you are going to need to switch them out with an appropriate wiper when the season ends. If you want to avoid this particular hassle, simply buy an all-season wiper that can be used all year round.
