How to Change Your Oil?

Once you’ve selected the kind of filter that fits your vehicle, it’s now time to change your oil. Don’t worry, most oil changes are pretty basic and just about anyone can do it just a little bit of instruction. Having said that, I hope that you enjoy the following guide on how to change your oil. These instructions should have you changing your oil like a professional in no time whatsoever.

Step One: Gather Your Supplies

The very first thing you should do is to get together all of the supplies you are going to need to change your oil. For your convenience, we’ve included a list down below.

Once you’ve gathered those things together, you’ll want to make sure that you have the appropriate amount of time set aside, too. If this is your first oil change, then you better assume that it will take you about an hour. If you’ve changed your oil before, however, then it should only take you about 15 to 20-minutes. 

Step Two: Get Your Vehicle Ready

Although you don’t want to change your oil right after you’ve shut down the engine, you also don’t want to change your oil if your vehicle is completely cold. Ideally, you’ll want the car to be warm so that the oil flows freely, but not so hot that the oil or exhaust system is a pain to deal with it. Once your vehicle has reached this state of nirvana, you want to make sure that carefully jack up your car and properly place your jack stand so that you can get under the vehicle. While doing this, be sure to observe all applicable safety precautions. Once the vehicle has been lifted safely, you can work on changing your oil. 

Step Three: Change Your Oil

Although some newer vehicles have guards that have to be removed in order to access the vehicle’s oil filter and drain plug, once you’re underneath most cars it’s pretty obvious where they are. Since most cars have a bottom-mounted filter that just screws on, then that’s what we’re going to use for our example. Locate your drain plug and position the drain pan underneath it. Now put on your rubber gloves. 

Using an appropriate wrench, remove the drain plug. Now all you have to do is wait for the oil to drip into the pan. To speed things up a bit you can look underneath your hood and remove the oil fill reservoir. This will release some suction and allow the oil to drain faster. 

While the oil is draining, take a good hard look at your oil drain plug. Examine it closely and make sure that it doesn’t contain cracks or any other defects. Also, do a good inspection of the drain plug washer. If it needs to be replaced, be sure to promptly replace it. It’s also a good idea to clean the drain plug up a bit to make sure it’s ready to be reinserted. 

Step Four: Reinsert the Drain Plug

The next thing you are going to want to do is reinsert the drain plug and tighten it up. Make sure that it’s tight enough that it doesn’t come off or drips oil, but also make sure that you don’t over-tighten. Once that’s been done, we can now turn our attention to the oil filter. 

Step Five: Change the Oil Filter

It’s now time to remove the oil filter. Although most oil filters aren’t tightened down extremely tightly, over time they can become hard to remove. That’s because their sealing gaskets can deform and swell over time. Reposition your drain pan underneath the filter and put your filter wrench on it. Using firm but steady pressure, use your wrench to loosen the filter. And before you ask—yes, oil is going to drip down and this part of the process is going to get pretty messy. There’s just no way to avoid it. Check the area where the filter seals to the vehicle and make sure there’s no O-ring residue left over. If there is, then remove it or otherwise the new filter won’t seal correctly. Add some oil to the inside of the filter and then dab oil on the filter’s O-Ring. Install it and make sure that it’s tight but don’t over-tighten it.

Step Six: Add Fresh Oil

At this point, your filter and drain plug should be properly tightened, but it doesn’t hurt to check them one more time to make sure. Once that’s done, you can go ahead and add oil to the vehicle. Make sure that you use precisely the right type of oil your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends and that you know exactly how many quarts of oil your vehicle holds. When I change my oil, I like to shortchange the oil by just one quart until after I’ve lowered my vehicle. For example, if your vehicle held 5.6-quarts of oil, then you would only add 4.6-quarts of oil. Once it’s been added, put the cap back on the oil refill reservoir and use your rags to clean up any messes.

Now start your vehicle and allow it to run in Park for approximately 30 to 45-seconds to allow the new oil to circulate. When this has been done, turn the vehicle off and check underneath your vehicle for any leaks. If there are leaks, then you’ll have to re-tighten the offending drain plug or filter and add more oil. If there are no leaks, then you can lower your vehicle back down. 

Step Seven: Check Your Oil & Cleanup Your Mess

Once the vehicle has been removed from the jack stands or ramps and it’s resting on the level ground, it’s time to check the level of your car’s oil. If you’ve followed my directions, then your vehicle should be approximately 1-quart low, so go ahead and feel free to add it now. You’ll also want to make sure that you properly dispose of your used oil. Most auto stores will accept used motor oil for recycling at no charge. All that’s left now is to finish cleaning up any residual mess.
