Best Headlight Restoration Kits – Reviews & Buying Guide

10Dupli-Color Headlight Restoration Kit

CHECK LATEST PRICE

Dupli-Color has been manufacturing some of the best touch-up automotive paints over the last six decades. Now, all of their experience with cars and applying it to their new headlight restoration kit. This kit uses a 2-step process that can not only restore the clarity of the headlight, so the driver can see better, but also provides a UV protective clear coat that keeps the headlight looking better longer. In our experience, the stripping compound did its job at removing the crud that made the headlight opaque in the first place, but there’s still a lot to be desired about the UV-protectant.

Pros:

  • Decent Stripping Power
  • Easy-to-Use

Cons:

  • UV Protection Could Be Better

9Wipe New Headlight Restore Kit

CHECK LATEST PRICE

This product claims to have everything the automotive owner needs to get their headlights in good condition, and it does have a few quality items in it. This kit comes with one wipe that’s infused with their Wipe New Formula, one professional polishing pad, a microfiber towel and a pair of nitrile glove. Although this product does a decent job at cleaning a lens, in my opinion, it doesn’t do as good a job as other products. And while it’s very easy-to-use and is an inexpensive product to buy, there isn’t enough product in this kit to do multiple restorations.

Pros:

  • Does an Okay Cleaning Job
  • Inexpensive

Cons:

  • Uses Are Limited

8TriNova Restoration Kit

CHECK LATEST PRICE

If yellow, foggy or dull headlights are getting you down, then this kit is ready to come to the rescue. This product comes with a few items which make headlight restoration a snap. Some of the items which can be found in this kit include headlight cleaning spray, headlight polish and a few sandpaper pads that can be used to buff out the headlight. While both the cleaning spray and polish are top-notch products and perform exactly the way they were designed, the small sandpaper disks don’t work quite as well. However, we’ve found that those could be simply replaced with 3,000-grit sandpaper and the rest of the kit performed very well.

Pros:

  • Cleans Well
  • Inexpensive

Cons:

  • Sandpaper Too Small

7Mothers NuLens Renewal Kit

CHECK LATEST PRICE

This kit is designed to replace all of the headlight cleaning and protection products that you may have accumulated over the past few years. It’s designed to be an all-in-one kit that not only restores the headlight back to its original condition but also protects it from future degradation. And they came pretty close to nailing it with this exciting kit. Unfortunately, there is one glaring problem with the kit which prevented it from moving up to a higher position on our list. The flaw is that the kit only provides one 3,000-grit piece of sandpaper, which falls apart pretty quickly. If they had just added one or two more pieces, then this kit would have ranked much higher.

Pros:

  • Cleans Well
  • Moderately Priced
  • All-in-One Kit

Cons:

  • Only Has One Sandpaper Pad

6Philips Headlight Restore Complete Kit

CHECK LATEST PRICE

Philips is known for making a variety of lighting products, but a few people don’t realize that they’ve also been making automotive products, too. Philips making these kinds of products seems like it would work out quite well. After all, who would know how to clean a headlight lens better than a company that makes headlight lenses. And upon opening this kit, it’s obvious that they know what they’re doing and have provided quite a few necessary items to the party. In fact, just about everything needed to restore your headlights are included in this kit. Unfortunately, this product also has two flaws: it takes a long time to use, and the UV protection wore off before the 2-year mark was up.

Pros:

  • Cleans Very Well
  • Moderately Priced
  • All-in-One Kit
  • Versatile

Cons:

  • Requires a Lot of Time
  • UV Protection Doesn’t Last Long Enough

How To Clean Your Headlights

Other people simply end up replacing their whole headlight lenses instead of bothering to clean them. However, both of those are extreme, in my opinion. After all, you can clean your own headlights and still get professional results. While it’s not as easy as washing your car, it actually isn’t too difficult.

Sure, you are going to have to buy the best headlight restoration kit that you can find, and you’re going to have to set some time aside to get the job done correctly, but those things aren’t that difficult. You can easily clean your headlight lenses in part of an afternoon.

Fortunately for you, this guide will give you all the details you need to correctly and quickly restore your headlights back to their former glory. Just be sure that you have a few hours set aside before you start, to make sure that you have enough time to properly do the job. Yes, I’m aware that some kits say they can restore your headlights in an hour or less, but there’s more than just the cleaning process to consider. There’s also preparation and cleanup as well, so let’s get right to it.

Step One: Gather What You Need

The first step towards cleaner headlights is to gather together some of the items that you’ll need.

Make sure that you buy the headlight restoration kit of your choice and then make sure that the kit you’ve chosen has what you need in it. Not all headlight restoration kits are complete, so you may have to supplement your kit with additional items to get the job done.  As a general guide, we’ve listed some of the things that you either need to get from your kit or will need to buy separately:

  • Several Types of Different Sandpaper Discs (1,000 to 3,000-Grit)
  • Headlight Cleaning Solution
  • UV Sealant
  • Painters Tape
  • Microfiber Towels

You will also need items to wash your headlights. Depending on your preferences, this may include the following items:

  • Bucket
  • Car Wash Sponge or Mitten
  • Windex
  • Paper Towels
  • Dry Towel

Step Two: Prepare Your Car

While you’re restoring your headlights, you may want to go ahead and wash your whole car. Just give it a good scrub down using the car wash methods you would generally use. However, if you don’t want to wash your whole car, you can just clean the headlights off using paper towels and Windex. Yes, I’m advocating cleaning the outside of the headlight lenses before actually cleaning them. And it’s an important step not to skip. Just a little bit of road grime can ruin your headlight cleaning job, so start off with a nice clean lens before you even begin. Once you’ve cleaned it, make sure it’s completely dry before proceeding to step three.

Step Three: Tape Off The Headlights

Make sure that you use painter’s tape around the headlight to protect your car’s paint job or trim. I know that some people skip this step, but I feel like it’s an important one. After all, when your sanding it’s quite easy to slip, and this tape may be all that stands between your sandpaper and your paint job. So do yourself a favor and take the time to tape off your headlights.

Step Four: Sand The Headlights

The next step is to sand your headlight lenses. You should always follow the instructions provided with your product to accomplish this in the correct manner, but I’ll give you a general overview of the process anyway. Wet your headlight and your 1,000-grit sandpaper and then sand using even horizontal strokes. As you sand, make sure that you sand in the same direction every single time. Also makes sure that you keep your headlight lens wet through the entire process to avoid scratching it. After you’ve spent anywhere from 3 to 10-minutes using the 1,000-grit sandpaper, you can then move up to the 2,000-grit sandpaper. Make sure this sandpaper and your headlight is wet and then begin sanding using diagonal strokes. Finally, use the 3,000-grit and do an opposite diagonal motion. Once again, make sure you keep everything wet during the entire process.

Step Four: Polish The Headlight; Apply Wax

Make sure that you completely dry off your headlights before continuing. Once you’ve finished drying it, take some of the kit’s polishing compound and squeeze it out into a microfiber towel. Rub it around your lens in circular motions for a few minutes. If you want, you can either do this by hand or use an orbital buffer. When the lens is completely clear, you can then apply wax to the lens. You can now proceed to the final steps

Step Five: Apply UV-Sealant

Now you can apply sealant to your headlights. If your kit doesn’t contain a product that protects your headlight from the damaging UV rays of the sun, then you are going to have to purchase it separately. No matter if you get it out of your kit or purchase it separately, however, just be sure not to skip this step. Otherwise, the sun will just ruin all the hard work you just put into cleaning your headlights, and you’ll have to start all over again. Be sure to follow the directions on your product precisely for the best results.

Step Six: Examine Your Results

The final step is to take a good hard look at your headlights and see how good of a job you did. If your headlight lens is still cloudy, then you may have to go over it again. However, some headlights are beyond help, and sometimes you can’t just clean them. In those instances, it’s best to either get professional help or just buy a new pair of headlights and replace them.
